If I am repainting a wall with latex paint, how long does it usually take to dry with good ventilation?

If it is a good paint it should be ';dry to the touch'; with in an hour or so. But you shouldn't put anything against it or hang anything on it for at least 24 hours. If I am repainting a wall with latex paint, how long does it usually take to dry with good ventilation?
if its dry to the eye, run your hand on it. if it still feels cool and moist, maybe a bit tacky then it will still take about an hour to dry (especially if you're going to recoat). the paint wont cure for days, however, and darker thicker paints take longer to dry and cure.

Is this paint latex or oil? Is it safe for pregnant women?

Is the Dulux Soft Sheen Pure Brilliant White - http://www.dulux.co.uk/products/info/sof鈥?/a> latex or oil? I ask if it safe for someone who is pregnant to move into a home that is newly painted with this product. They say latex is okay, oil is not.

Thanks! Is this paint latex or oil? Is it safe for pregnant women?
The website you linked to indicates that the paint is water soluble:

';Cleaning

After use, remove as much paint as possible from brushes before cleaning with water.';

Therefore, it is latex and should be okay. Any fumes have the potential to be harmful, but latex is certainly less harmful than oil would be.Is this paint latex or oil? Is it safe for pregnant women?
latex is water based, and is safe.

Oil paint has harmful fumes and is not safe for pg. women.

I have not heard of the paint you listed.
Remember all oil base paints are harmful. That's why it is being discontinued here in calif. Also water base paint is only safe for pregnant women if it is odorless or does not contain EG.
It is latex. You can tell by the wash up procedures.

Why won't latex paint dry thoroughly?

I've painted my kitchen cabinets, but even days later they still feel tacky to the touch. I've used quality semi-gloss paint (Behr -- I also painted the walls with Behr satin, no problems) and I cleaned and primed the surfaces ahead of time. The temp in the house has been in the 60s and 70s, so I'm not sure what the problem is. Any suggestions or remedies? Why won't latex paint dry thoroughly?
Is is really humid in your kitchen?? Also if it is cold - it may feel damp= when it is actually it is cold-also if there is oil base underneath it- it may not stick or dry-DWhy won't latex paint dry thoroughly?
Need to get the humidity out of the house. Rent a de-humidifier.
Open the windows up some to move some new air into the house on a sunny day when the barometric pressure is up. That will help dry it out. Also, it's good to let the first coat dry for about 24 hours or so before painting the second coat.

The only other things I can think of is if you got a bad batch of paint or if you forgot to stir the paint like you should.
Try running a fan in the kitchen, I'm guessing the first layer wasn't quite dry. Also with your cooking try not to boil anything or any other cooking methods that will add moisture to the air...
DID you do two coats without lettinf the first one dry properly? That will greatly increase drying time.
it sounds like you may have used a latex primer and an oil topcoat, you are not getting proper adhesion. If this is what you did you will have re prime with an oil based primer and re topcoat.

My basement wall is dry, should I still apply latex paint or vapor barrier anyway prior to finishing?

I wanted to take extra precautions when finishing my basement but is it worth the extra cost/work? my original plan was to waterproof the block wall with latex paint or a vapor barrier, add 1'; styrofoam, then an insulated 2x4 stud wall. Could I skip the latex paint or vapor barrier if my basement doesn't get water? My basement wall is dry, should I still apply latex paint or vapor barrier anyway prior to finishing?
Yes you will need to use UGL's block sealer. Even though it is not wet there is moisture there that you will trap if you dont seal it. It will eventually be a problem if you dont.

Is there a way to recover latex paint that has ';curdled';, and separated, presumably due to having been frozen?

The colored part has curdled, but the clear part is at the top.Is there a way to recover latex paint that has ';curdled';, and separated, presumably due to having been frozen?
If it's been frozen, probably not. I had some that a tenant left in the garage all winter. It looked okay once I had stirred it up but on the wall, it never really dried and didn't cover well. I'd experiment a little before committing yourself to using it.Is there a way to recover latex paint that has ';curdled';, and separated, presumably due to having been frozen?
When recovering old paint my first step is to take the hard, dried film off the top of the can (if it's there) and my second stop is 5 minutes in a paint shaker. Then I crack the can and see how it's doing.

It's NORMAL for solids to get very lumpy and hard when the paint has sat for a couple of years. This is not necessarily a problem.

If it's still lumpy, then either it needs more shaking... if I feel lucky I'll throw some 1/2'; nuts in there :) ... or the paint is just shot.

Given the low cost of latex paint, and the very HIGH cost of the man who does paint prep and paint (i.e. me!) -- I don't fool around with dicey paint.

How to legally dispose of unwanted paint? ';Paint something you don't want, then throw it away'; is what a very brilliant man once told me.
You can remix and then strain the lumps. Get a disposable paint funnel from the paint store. It is a paper funnel with screen around the bottom. Cost about $2 and saves a lot of mess. Just set it on an empty paint can and pour the damaged paint through it.

The remixed paint will be thinner than originally, but is still usable.
rangers' anwser is good on repairing the paint. but depending on what u want to use it for now is the next question - remember the quality of the paint has been compromised t4 the final results will not be the best. good luck
You might be able to strain it with a cheese cloth or fine mesh screen. That's what painting companies use to remove lumpiness from paints. It's a mess, though.

Whats the easiest and or quickest way to get white latex paint over-spray off of tile floors?

There are a couple of options. #1, find a chemical called ';Goof Off.'; It will take just about anything off of just about anything else. Spot test for safety first (don't want to screw up the floor). #2, since it's latex, soak it with water for a little bit and then simply take a plastic scraper (for spackle) and scrape at it. This shouldn't harm the surface of the floor, but it may take a bit more work.Whats the easiest and or quickest way to get white latex paint over-spray off of tile floors?
Warm soapy water and a sponge!!!!Whats the easiest and or quickest way to get white latex paint over-spray off of tile floors?
If it was done recently, I use warm water with a dish scrub sponge. If it's old paint that you want to remove, use a product called Goof Off or Goo Gone (you can get it at any hardware or paint store). It has a very strong smell so try not to breath it in too much or else you'll get light headed. But either of these will definitely work.
I use OOPHS! it is designed to remove latex paint from surfaces.
If the tile is smooth you can scrape it off with a razor blade.
You can use lighter fluid to dissolve the paint off just the tile, be careful if it's in the grout. If it is in the grout it probably get out the paint but you have to work harder and try not to rub it into the grout. Repeat the application until the paint is dissolved using and turning a clean cloth. You will have to use hot soapy water to wash the tile when done, or the floors will be oily. Next to that possibly paint thinner, clean up with the hot soapy water. Or a razor blade....which isn't much help after it soaks into the grout....good luck......
    easy, mineral spirits. Paint thinner
    fingernail polish remover works great!

Does thinning latex paint by 10 to 20 percent radically alter its finish properties?

I intend use 4 stage turbine HVLP to spray latex paint. I have not found any concrete information on what the proper viscosity of the paint should be or if it can be thinned at all. Most HVLP sprayers can not spray unthinned latex.Does thinning latex paint by 10 to 20 percent radically alter its finish properties?
    hiya richard...

water, as it relates to latex paints, is a diluent. in other words, water reduces the viscosity of latex paints without changing the film forming process (curing) or affecting the performance properties of the finish product...

other reducers, such as alcohols or alcohols blended with specific petro-chemical derivatives, will chemically react with and alter the way paint films cures - and therby possibly affecting characteristics such as adhesion, flexibility, stain resistance etc. etc. ...

thinning with water up to 20% will have no effect on the color other than, because the finish product is thinner, it may be a little more transparent leaving the previous color show through the film a little more (in other words, an additional coat or two may be required for complete opacity)...

latex paints will perform at an optimum level when applied at a specific mil thickness (depending on type of product). for example, a latex paint may be a 50% solids material meaning 50% of the paint coating is evaporative solvent. if the product is designed to perform at an optimum level of 2.0 mils dry then it must be applied at 4.0 mils wet (1 coat) or two coats applied at 2.0 mils wet to achieve a total of 2.0 mil dry film thickness.

all paint theoretically can be applied at 1600 square feet per gallon at 1 mil, so if it were to be applied at 4.0 mils thick, the theoretical spread rate would be 400 square feet per gallon.

how all this relates to how much you can thin latex paints for spraying through hvlp is this...by adding 20% water, you effectively increase the spread rate by 20% which means you now have a gallon of paint that will travel 480 square feet per gallon as opposed to 400 square feet per gallon.

while that may sound good, what you've added to your product is all evaporative solvent (water) and your solid contents remain the same. therefore, you have reduced the dry film thickness (dft) to 1.67 mils spread over 480 square feet. if your optimum performance is a 2.0 mils (dft) you can see that another coat of paint will be necessary to achieve optimum performance.

so, does it alter the finish properties? not really - just be aware that a thinner coat may not perform in the manner in which it was designed, but easily corrected by additional coats of paint.

depending on what type and brand of latex paint and hvlp sprayer you're using - generally speaking, a 4 stage turbine should be able to atomize most latex paints with minimal thinning (5% or less)...stay away from inexpensive contractor grade latex materials - these products most likely contain thixotropes designed to give paint ';build'; or thickness at the expense of spread rate. these products are usually so viscous that you could never spray 'em through hvlp - and you really wouldn't want to.

instead, stay with premium lines of product. typically they are thinner in viscosity already and their flow and leveling properties are so much better than inexpensive coatings. flats and low-sheened products usually require a little more thinning than the higher gloss latex coatings, but typically i spray latex enamels (satin, semi-gloss and high gloss) with little or no thinning through a 3 stage turbine.

finally, consider using flow agents, instead of thinning with water, when spraying with latex paints especially when spraying with hvlp. hvlp heats the air that atomizes the paint and sometimes results in a dry spray effect. flow agents, such as ';floetrol'; (manufactured by the flood company and available in paint stores) is a blend of solvent (water and glycols plus chemical soaps) to slightly retard the drying time of latex paints, thereby improving the flow and leveling of the paint film. read the label, but i think they recommend treating latex paints at a rate of up to 1 pint floetrol per gallon of paint. you'll be amazed with the results.

i hope this information is more helpful than confusing - experiment a little with some of the info listed above until you come up with a system that works best for you...good luck on your projects.

ricDoes thinning latex paint by 10 to 20 percent radically alter its finish properties?
to this it more then 10% does alter the paint... as far as what effects it has I am not sure you would need to speak to someone at the company... I do know that if you need to thin out paint you should use flotrol or something that is meant for paint and not paint thinner...
OH YES.. It will change the HUE of the paint.. Be very careful..If you add one cup(for exammple) of water to a gallon of paint, make sure you do it in ALL the gallons.. This happened to me here and I had to have the whole paint job done over again because at the latter part of the painting, the painter added water.. what a mess.
yes. You'll not get the same finish!! Ask where you bought the paint!! They'll be happy to help you!!!

Does anyone know what will take white latex paint off hardwood flooring?

You have to be careful with this, because with the right amount of ANY solvent, you can actually eat away at the sealants in your wood floor, assuming you have any.

Try this, it will amaze you:

Simply lightly wring out a wet rag and drape it right on the paint. Within probably five minutes, the latex will have absorbed enough water to simply slide off, leaving no marks on the wood and leaving the finish intact. I used this technique after repainting windows near a staircase and it saved lots of time and hassle.

Why should you not use an oil paint brush on latex paint?

that says it:-Why should you not use an oil paint brush on latex paint?
    |I will tell you the reason I have painted 37 years ..since the age of 13 when I started with my uncles during summers when school let out..Oil based brushes are made with chinese bristle or ox hair...They are a natural hair and the water used in latex paint and to clean the brushes when they dry out make the natural bristles brittle and they start to break after stored then used again for they dry out..with oil based paints you use spirits, turpentine, or paint thineer to clean them which has oil in them, so the oil from the thinner is similar to humans having a natural oil in thier hair keeping them pliable and not brittle...this is why people have split ends and brittle hair is usually from the hair not having enough oil in it due to dyes, bleaching, perms etcetera...The true chinese bristle paint brushes are super fine and make the oil based paints flow better with fewer brush marks in them...But when used with water..it dries the bristles out..making them break..Why should you not use an oil paint brush on latex paint?
brush marks are the #1 reason. it won't hurt the brush though.

you do not want to use a latex brush with oil paint though. it will damage the brush.
    use a latex paint brush
pcbeach gave a great answer, I didn't know that. Also, I found when I used a bristle brush once to paint with latex that the bristle brush seemed to absorb a lot of paint and that made it very heavy, too soft, and hard to paint with.
    the paint brush is allergic?
The bristles are designed to work with oil base. Water base will ruin an oil base brush. A latex brush is not made to be used with oil base paints.

well question pretty much describes it, oh and it has to work on glass and ceramic. What can take latex paint off hard wood floors with out ruining the floor? its dried on?
Try Goof-Off -- it's made especially to get dried latex paint off of surfaces -- it should be fine for all of the surfaces, but it is strong so you do have to exercise caution when using it. It will work like a charm on the glass and ceramic -- it will also work on the hardwood floors but I would be extra cautious and use the minimum you can use to get results on them. Then remove any leftover residue from the Goof-Off because I'm thinking it could break down the finish on the hardwood if left behind. You can get it at any hardware store or home depot or lowe's.What can take latex paint off hard wood floors with out ruining the floor? its dried on?
I would gently scrape (so you don't scratch) with an old credit card.

Lightly moistening the paint will help soften the paint. Don't saturate it and don't leave the water on too long. Work with small areas at a time - moisten, let sit a minute or two, then carefully scrape the paint. Then wipe dry. I don't think goof-off is good for this because it may remove/damage the finish of the floor.

Can I spray Latex paint through a spray gun?

Hi, I am about to do some painting. The material is security screen, which is sheetmetal with little holes in it. It is going to be sandblasted clean. The paint I will be using is Behr Ultra Premium, the one that is a paint and primer in the same can, and will be latex, custom mixed for color. I have a 60 gallon compressor, and a Harbor Freight spray gun. It is a HPLV gun, and has a 2 pint cup. I tried to get specs on it but it is no longer carried at H.F.. It works at 40 PSI at the paint cup and 10 PSI at the air-cup. I understand the paint can only be thinned less than 5%. I wanted to know if I can run the latex through the gun, will it hurt the gun, and/or will the paint look crappy when applied? Thanks!!!Can I spray Latex paint through a spray gun?
Something does not add up. All the HVLP systems I know do not use a compressor, just a turbine. I have sprayed latex enamels with a HVLP sprayer, but I did not use a compressor. It will not hurt any spray gun, but cleaning will be a chore. Have plenty of denatured alcohol around. Start cleaning with water and then use the alcohol for the fine residue.

The 40/10 psi you mention sounds like you are using a conventional siphon feed gun. They do not do well with latex paints. The main thing to watch for is the fluid cap and the needle, they determine what viscosity of finishes will work with the gun. Without having the manual for you gun, maybe take it to a good paint store and see what they say about it.

By far the best system for spraying latex paints is an airless spray system. It might be worth it to rent one. The hours saved might pay for the rental. Hope this helps. Can I spray Latex paint through a spray gun?
may i am conffused also. u did say u where spraying metal? is that paint designed for metal. most paint used for that is enamel only which u use thinner on to thin and cleanup. most latex paint is water cleanup and water and metal do not mix unless u have a good primer on it. i may be wrong andnot aware of this type. excuse me if i am.

Did you try a little nail polish remover? I haven't tried it myself, but my Sister said it worked. She had spilled a little red paint on her cream colored carpet.

If they are small spots, like I had recently, use a sharp utility knife or scissors and cut the paint out if you can do so without cutting too much of the nap off. You won't be able to tell you cut out a small spot. If the spots are too big or deep, try the goof off.How can i get dried latex paint out of the carpet?

I am looking for a product to remove latex paint from my fireplace. No harmful vapors and quick acting.?

It has to be 100% safe to use without a mask and inside the house. Please respond ONLY if you have used a product described this way and had excellent results.I am looking for a product to remove latex paint from my fireplace. No harmful vapors and quick acting.?
According to the brochure I've been saving in case I ever get motivated to strip paint from my fireplace.... you'd want Peel Away 8. The company seems to welcome questions: (212) 869-6350.

Some people say to use a heat gun and scrape it away.

Sorry I could'nt find more.I am looking for a product to remove latex paint from my fireplace. No harmful vapors and quick acting.?
I absolutely agree with Les. As a paint professional, I have NEVER seen a product remove paint from brick that was worth a darn. all you get is a huge mess and a very nasty looking fireplace. If the paint absolutely must come off, sandblasting is your only option. Call a sandblaster in your area, you never know, they might have a solution for you.

Your other option is to repaint the bricks to look like brick again. This works GREAT. I've done it twice. Ask Home depot for color suggestions to get the look you want. You'll need at least 3 colors in a flat/matte finish; a base coat, a slightly different (lighter or browner) accent color and a darker color for texture and grout lines. Paint the whole thing with the base coat. Then dilute the accent color by 50% with water or glaze and dab it on with a rag or brush. Go back and remove some of the accent color with a rag so it has a mottled effect. (try out different methods and tools for applying and removing to see what you like best BEFORE you begin the project!) If you're really trying to simulate brick, it's better to accent a few bricks at a time. Let dry. Now apply the darker grout color (also diluted 50%) to the bricks with a paint brush and wipe it off with a rag to darken the pits and low spots in the brick. Let dry. Apply it to grout areas with a sponge applicator, dabbing with a rag or terry towel to keep the grout lines from looking too artificial.

If you choose your colors carefully; practice on a few bricks beforehand to get the effect you like, and remeber to dilute your accent and grout colors (diluting the paint lets the ';brick'; color of the base coat come through well, and accents the natural texture of the brick) You should get a great effect for the price of a few quarts of paint.

    Good luck on your project.
Goof off is a good product but it does smell.

Having been doing odd jobs for years I have never see or heard of any thing that is 100% safe that will do what you want.

So are just a little better than others.
    GOO GONE or GOOF OFF
Orange-based paint stripper. I used it on my kitchen cabinets and never missed a meal. Home Depot, Lowes, etc.
Once brick is painted, it is pretty well destined to remain painted.

There is no chemical product that will remove latex paint with no fumes, and even then the paint inside the millions of pores in the brick will not come off.

Sandblasting is the only way to restore painted brick, but that is out of the question if this is an occupied dwelling.

What causes paint to bubble when painting latex paint on newly primed walls?

I've seen latex paint bubble and peel off the wooden molding because the walls were absorbent sheet rock and the molding had obviously been formerly painted with oil-based enamel. What causes paint to bubble when painting latex paint on newly primed walls?
It sounds like you used oil-based primer. Latex will not stick to a surface where oil-based was used ahead of it. Well, it will stick, but not well. What causes paint to bubble when painting latex paint on newly primed walls?
the paint is not mixed correctly. talk to home depot next time you are there.
The primer did not dry completely - or perhaps the air was humid when you put on the paint.

Is their such a thing as non-latex paint?

Im paintng my room but im allergic to latex...anything will help. THANKSIs their such a thing as non-latex paint?
oil based paint, harder to clean the brushes thoughIs their such a thing as non-latex paint?
I just did some research with latex allergy associations because I'm going through the same challenge, and was concerned not only with the painting, but also with daily contact. They say that nearly all ';latex'; allergies are a misnomer. It is actually an allergy to natural rubber. Therefore, synthetic rubbers, such as those in acrylic paints should have no effect. Now to go find out how many products with penicillin will kill my daughter... :)
there is oil base which smells to high heck and is difficult to clean up after but very very durable. i would go w/oil if you cannot use latex. you'll just need paint thinner to clean your brushes and you'll need lots of rags on hand. i would get roller covers that aren't too costly so, if you get tired and don't want to paint any more that day you can just toss it in the trash rather then having to rinse and rinse w/thinner. also, you'll need excellent ventilation! the smell can make one nauseated. oil takes longer to dry but it dries to a smoother finish. enamels are oil or alkyd based. alkyd based will need turpentine for cleaning. latex paints are either vinyl or acrylic based. also oil has better adhesion. i would go to home depot and tell them your situation they will help you choose best paint for you ... and rather you want flat, semi gloss and so on. good luck!
well get anotehr person to paint it i have the same prob and i get my friends to paint or somthing then when it drys its fine :D

you need to determine what type of berber, ie... wool, cotton, combo of cotton rayon.....etc. and, you need to know if the paint and primer is oil base or water base. Once you have determined the above, call up a reputable carpet cleaning company, tell them the problem and they will help you out. I personnaly like Stanley Steemer, they will come out for free and tell at no charge.

I have had paint in my carpet and Stanley Steemer got it out. Another good company is Service Masters or, Coit
Try dish soap or Oxy Clean.
I would suggest that you use Motsenbocker's Lift Off number 5 - Latex Based Paint remover. I have used it on tile and it even helped me remove nail polish from one of my favorite pairs of pants without damage to the fabric or altering of the color. Since carpet is fabric as well I would suggest a couple of sprays and scrubbing the area lightly with a brush. Then dilute the area with clear water and blot, blot, blot. When dry vacuum. Good luck!!

  • How do I get latex paint out of a coat!!?

Okay, long story short, I got latex house paint all over my nice coat :( Does anyone know what might get it out?%26gt;How do I get latex paint out of a coat!!?
If you are not sure that you can get the paint out at home you might consider taking it to your local cleaners and let them get it out. It would depend if you think your coat is worth the charges of the cleaners. Look at it this way, if you try and do it yourself and it ends up being in worse shape than before you started you are out a coat, but if the cleaners say they can get the paint out and they mess up the coat even worse, then they have to make it right with you. It is your decision about the cost of the cleaners vs. the coats worth. How do I get latex paint out of a coat!!?
    Try denature alcohol
wash it as soon as able, mom says, latex is water soluble until totally dry, don't dry it in the dryer, that sets the paint, after the first laundry, if some paint is left try scratching at it with your fingernail, is it pealing off, keep it up on the other missed spots and wash again, maybe with some pretreatment this time, don't dry, look at the coat well, still spots, take a tooth brush and 50/59 mix of liquid soap and start the scrubbing, hopefully your coat is durable, like jean or canvas, otherwise watch witch way you scrub as to not damage the fabric, wash again, hopefully by now it is clean, hang dry, don't use the dryer yet, after it dries for a couple of days, look the coat over again for any smears of paint, if you find some repeat last steps, hang dry again and look at it, as soon as it is completely clean, wash a last time and dryer it to put it into shape,

all this is only if the coat is washable to begin with, and the value of the soaps isn't above the cost of a new one.

mom says next time you paint to make sure that you are wearing play clothes that you can throw in the dumpster when done painting

How do you get latex paint just spilled on a thick rug with underpad. About a third of a gallon?

oh God . . . this happened to me, too -- twice (I'm not allowed to paint anymore in the house)! Dilute with water and sop up as much as you can before it dries!!! This worked for me for the first stain but not the second.

If you can't remove all of the stain, a friend who manages an apartment complex suggested this:

have a professional carpet repairman remove a section of carpet from the closet in that room (it will match and will be clean) and replace the stained section with the closet section. Worked like a charm for me.

Good Luck! How do you get latex paint just spilled on a thick rug with underpad. About a third of a gallon?
Wash with water before the paint dries, and hope the water doesn't cause it to moulder.

Does paint thinner take latex paint off ? and what will gas do?

we are trying to take old paint off of the paint brushesDoes paint thinner take latex paint off ? and what will gas do?
Go to your local paint store, and buy a product called ';Brush %26amp; Roller Cleaner'; It will cost about $6.00 for a quart. soak the brush in the cleaner for 10-15 minutes and it should come clean. if it is really bad, leave the brush in for a couple hours. after you have soaked them, wash in soapy water, hang to dry and it will be like a new brush. if they were cheap brushes, toss them. I am assuming they are worth the trouble to clean the up.Does paint thinner take latex paint off ? and what will gas do?
Never use gasoline for anything but an engine. It's extremely dangerous. Paint removers are a good choice. However, you didn't say what you were taking the paint off of. It could make a big difference.
There are quite a few products that are made to do exactly that. You can get them at any Home improvement store (Menards, Home depot) or paint store.

Once paint hardens you can't get it off with gasoline or paint thinner.
You clean latex paint brushes with water -- in fact, many people prefer latex because of the ease of cleanup. Paint thinner is used to clean up oil-based paints.

P.S. If the paint is dried on, cleaners may not work. You may have to throw out the brushes.

See this website for more info:

    http://www.sherwin-williams.com/do_it_yo鈥?/a>
Paint thinner will only do so much. When cleaning it you have to kind of massage and scrape the paint off with your fingers. Gasoline will help. It takes off pait off of a car. But, that is also a waste of gas. Just continue with paint thinner and water.
Latex paint is water-based. The minute your are finished painting something, that is the exact time to clean your brushes and rollers in warm, soapy water. If you allow the paint to dry on those brushes and roller, paint thinner, water or gasoline will do nothing to soften that paint. If the brush is not an expensive one, then just toss it and go buy a new one.

Rollers are rarely worth the cost of trying to save.

There are special ';brush cleaning products'; that you can find in the paint section of large hardware stores that will help soften the paint on brushes but once again, it comes down to the value of the brush vs the time it takes to clean it and the price of the brush cleaning solvent. I could see you doing this if these were expensive hog's hair brushes meant for alkyd based paints but most brushes meant for latex paint are made from synthetics.

Gasoline is a highly volatile product that evaporates into the air quickly. In an enclosed space, this could prove to be deadly because if enough gasoline fumes are present, it only takes a small spark to cause an explosion that will disintegrate an entire home and then burn whatever is left of it. Never, ever use gasoline as a cleaning tool. It's meant to power internal combustion engines only.

What can i use to disolve household latex paint...to paint a mural?

or what is the best kind of paint to use if i were to paint on high gloss walls? i dont want a glossy efect, just normal flat . thank youWhat can i use to disolve household latex paint...to paint a mural?
Methalated spirits dissolves Latex paint if that is what you need to do.

Are the walls high gloss? like hard like woodwork paint. If so you are better sanding and undercoating before doing your mural.

If they are latex;wash if grubby; lightly sand 80-120 grit sandpaper (10min. max) and off you go

You rarely strip paint from a wall as part of preparation. What can i use to disolve household latex paint...to paint a mural?
Paint will not adhere to high gloss. You will have to prime and repaint the wall before doing anything. No need to sand. I have heard people wash with TSP instead of using primer. I've never tried it
Use craft paint for your mural. You can get it at Walmart, Michaels, Jo-Anns etc. Get some extender medium too.
Your question is confusing. When you say dissolve latex paint, do you mean how can you remove it from the wall so you can paint a mural there instead?

Is there such a thing as a clear gloss that I can use over interior latex paint?

prefferably something that is not a spray paint kind of thing, I want to gloss very small sections and would like to do it with a paintbrushIs there such a thing as a clear gloss that I can use over interior latex paint?
you probably want a glaze. Is there such a thing as a clear gloss that I can use over interior latex paint?
I've used brush on polyurethane before. Worked for me! It's the same idea of the spray on type and I've used it before on larger areas but the brush on type is good for small jobs. Make sure you use a brush that is specifically made for it. I've had problems with ';tracks'; before I started using the finer brushes.
I painted my bathroom vanity with a latex paint and then covered it with 3 coats of Varathane which is a brand name for clear polyurethane. The best way to apply it is with the foam type of brush which you can just throw away after. If you can avoid the dust and sand lightly with a fine sandpaper between the coats you will get a super durable, glossy, and easy to clean surface.

If you use Varathane ';Diamond'; finish it is water based for easy clean and minimal odors but slightly more expensive.
Behr makes a clear glaze that is usually mixed with your interior paint, but I can't see why you couldn't apply it directly with a brush. You would be best off going to a good paint store and asking for help.

then get a Porcelain repair kit, and refinish it. Is there some way to restore a claw foot tub that someone painted over with latex paint?
you can get your tub refinished one of 3 ways professionally. The more prevalent is an epoxy type system which I think is crap. The next one it tohave tha paint baked on---again its crap

And the other is to have the old porcelan replaced with new porcelan. The best method.

yes you can sand it down, fill the ridges and pits with fiberglass and coat the entire tub with a porcelain restores ask at your home improvement store.

Added comment:WD 40 is good for many things including removing stickers and adhesives but it is NOT going to work on latex paint and it will only make the wall surface greasy.I need to get spraypaint (Krylon H2O latex paint) off my wall and carpet?
    For the carpet, Go to:

    http://rugrag.com/StainRemoval.aspx

Select ';paint'; from the drop box. I think you'll have really good luck with this procedure, I can't tell you how many crazy things it's helped us with. DON'T purchase the all in one cleaners, they're really created to blanket as many possible stains as possible. if you want the best results, use the stain tool above, it's custom tailored to your specific stain. Its really intended for even the finest of Persian rugs, but I use this on our wall to wall carpeting downstairs too. Simply fantastic
Believe it or not you can try WD40. This is good as it will not damage the surface of the wall or the carpet.

This is the first thing I'd try as it is very easy to see if it will break down the paint if not you can move onto something more powerful if need be.

Always do a test area first to make sure you are not going to do more damage to the area you are trying to fix.

Can i put polyurethane on a table which i have painted with Acrylic Latex paint.?

I am building a beer pong table, and i have been using Valspar Acrylic Latex Primer and Paint. I know this is not oil based, but does this mean i cannot use Polyurethane to protect the table? Also i have Valspar Clear Gloss, which i am assuming is clear coat, would clear coat protect the table just as polyurethane would? Can i put polyurethane on a table which i have painted with Acrylic Latex paint.?
This is a very unusual combination...However, it can be accomplished %26amp; successful as long as the latex paint has cured completely, usually up to a week. As far as the results go. What I would first attempt doing is using this procedure on a sample board to show you the results. My thoughts are if you were to apply the poly too thick, it might have a wrinkle appearance. Also, if the poly has an yellowish orange tint to it, it might effect the final color you're trying to achieve...You'll probably have the best results using a ';waterborne'; poly...Deft %26amp; Minwax both make a good product..Hope this helps...Can i put polyurethane on a table which i have painted with Acrylic Latex paint.?
Yes, just be sure the undercoatings are completely dry before applying the poly. You know they are completely dry if the surface is not tacky and when you put your nose to the surface you cannot smell any paint.

Most ordinary polyurethanes are clear. Only in recent years have manufacturers been adding colors to some polyurethanes (Minwax, I believe is one) to make it a one step process.

The polyurethane itself is what protects the finish, not the sheen or color of the poly. Auto manufacturers always clear coat automobile finishes on top of the color coat, except they will usually use a lacquer instead of poly. For what you are doing forget lacquer. It can only be best applied using a sprayer and it requires skill to apply.

Are there any serious dangers to skin contact with exterior latex paint?

I'm been hired to do my first mural and it is a 90 foot fence. I've been at it for two weeks now and I've noticed I'm getting a lot of paint on my skin, I'm usually using a mask and latex gloves but I'm wondering if being closely exposed in the short or long term could be dangerous, if so what signs should I look for if there is a problem? Are there any serious dangers to skin contact with exterior latex paint?
if your working outside the ppm of air borne latex is minute compared to the atmosphere. if your allergic to latex then use vinyl gloves. all paint manufacturers will upon request will give you a sheet discribing the possible dangers. it's available from the retailer, BY FEDERAL LAW.Are there any serious dangers to skin contact with exterior latex paint?
There are no more dangers from the paint than from the latex gloves you are using. Latex paint is water based which means the fumes are benign compared to oil or other solvent based paints. Ditto for what you get on your skin, but if you are still uncomfortable wear long sleeves and a cap.
latex paint is fine. its the lead based paint that is banned that you need to watch out for. try to not get it on your skin but it is nearly impossible not too. unless you are eating paint you are good ;)
Everything that comes into contact on the skin is absorbed and processed by the liver. It can lead to bad things. Wear latex gloves when you paint.

  • What natural additive takes the bad odor out of latex paint?

it's an old trick~~~~~~HINT} just a teaspoon will do.What natural additive takes the bad odor out of latex paint?
vanilla extractWhat natural additive takes the bad odor out of latex paint?
I've always heard about urinating in the paint to make it stick better but, I'm not sure how that will help the odor.
The prior answerer is right, but I'd be concerned about the dark colour of vanilla altering a white paint. There's also peppermint extract, which is colourless, but this could make it attractive to kids and pets... An alternative is to spread baking soda in a plate and have a couple in the room. Spreading it thin increases the surface area for more odour absorption, it is cheap and harmless. And it works. It's not too cold to leave a window cracked, and if you use the alternate, vinegar, don't mix it with the baking soda; it'll only fizz, and this reaction turns it into saline: plain old useless salt water! There's also a great product I've mentioned before: ';Nil Odour';, which can be found in hardware stores, and possibly in the drugstore, in that section where the old-time remedies are sold. It only takes a drop dispensed here and there, and it really works to get rid of odours.
What about the same flavour used in banana flavoured condoms?

Does temperature affect the color of latex paint?

That is my question. I want to know about your questionsand please paste some informations related to my questions. This is for my science investigatory project. Please help me. Write the link of it. thanks!Does temperature affect the color of latex paint?
Temperature of the object should not effect color. If you bake the paint at high temperatures, you can permanently effect its color. Objects of different temperatures emit different amounts and wavelengths of Infrared Radiation (IR) which is not visible ... What does a gallon of latex paint weigh after the water evaporates?

I contacted someone that I know who worked in the manufacture of latex paint for 35 years. He said that about 50% by weight of the mixture is water. Except for white paint, a small amount of non-water tint is added for color. Since water weighs 8.345 pounds per gallon, the weight of only the water in a gallon of latex paint is approximately 4.17 pounds. When the paint dries, all the water has evaporated and the remainder should weigh a little over 4 pounds (not including the container).

He also said that a few of the factory's customers have been known to water down the paint in order to save money.

Even though half the paint by weight is water, the non-water ingredients are petroleum based so are lighter in weight than the water and therefore take up most of the volume.

.What does a gallon of latex paint weigh after the water evaporates?
Depends on how much solvent and water was in it...

How do you get acrylic latex paint out of clothes and off skin?

don't askHow do you get acrylic latex paint out of clothes and off skin?
I don't know if this will work but you might try it on your clothes. Put full strength pine oil on the paint spots and rub it in well, then wash as usual. Check spots to see if the pine oil faded them, if so, treat them again and rewash. Do this as often as you need to before putting them in the dryer. Pine oil will also be good to take the paint off your hands. How do you get acrylic latex paint out of clothes and off skin?

Yes, polyurethane varnish will yellow things, even more over time. this is good for us who like the golden aged look, but I can see that it wouldn't be so good for what you are doing. You can use a product called Minwax Polycrylic. it is a water based varnish which is crystal clear, and as far as my experience goes, stays clear. Light blue label on the can. you can get it anywhere like home depot or Lowe's, or probably any hardware store.I painted a figure on wood with latex paint. i would like poly it, without it turning yellow. Craft stores have clear acrylic varnishes, and paint stores should have clear varnishes too.

How do you remove latex paint from ceramic tile and grout without damaging the tile?

    Latex paint from tile

I just finished painting my own bathroom. Just use a putty knife on a slight tilt and carefully push on the paint spots (don't rush this job), then wipe clean. As for the latex paint on the grout, be sure you have waited a couple of weeks, wet it down, and then use ';Scotch Brite'; pads to gently go over the grout. Do not push on the pad too much. Latex, as you know, can be taken off with water. I use warm, soapy water to do this.

Keeping it wet and warm is a big plus, especially if it is fairly recent. Try to use a scraper that is plastic if possible. Sometimes an abrasive handcleaner and a stiff plastic bristle brush will do the trick.

if its latex paint, you can wash it off. a razor blade will take off the thicker stuff. a brush and some hot water should clean it out of the grout.
Razor blade for the tile. For the grout, spray some hot water on it and let it sit for a minute, then scrub with a cleaning brush.
soap, water and a wash cloth on the tiles you will have to get a grout cleaner for the grout because it is so porous.

Rent a good carpet cleaner just as soon as you can.How can you get latex paint out of a carpet without messing it up?
I must say, your chances of totally removing the paint aren't good.

If it's still wet: Blot as much as possible with an absorbent cloth. Flood the stain with water and then get as much water as possible up, either by blotting, or preferably, with a wet/dry vac or carpet steam-cleaning device. Repeat many many times. HOPEFULLY this will do the trick.

If it's dry and is a very small stain (like one single drop of paint). Hopefully the carpet has a medium pile (most standard residential carpet does). Take tweezers and a sharp razor blade. Use the tweezers to hold the section of dried paint steady and carefully cut right below the paint with the razor blade. If it's a really, really small spot (covering, say, 3-4 plies of carpet), the resulting dent in the carpet pile should be unnoticeable. For slightly larger spots, you may have to feather a few surrounding plies of carpet with the razor blade to ';cut in'; the dent. Work slowly and be very very careful. Hard to get blood out of carpet too.

For a LARGE dry stain. You can TRY saturating it with an appropriate paint thinner, and hope that it softens enough to be sucked out with water. Check your paint thinner on an inconspicuous portion of carpet first, because if you dissolve the carpet, it will look even worse. If the paint is only on the very tops of the fibers, you can try cutting it free as you would with a smaller stain, but you're likely to have a really noticeable dent in your carpet pile henceforth. Realistically, for a large dry stain, you're probably just going to have to purchase an attractive throw rug.
Use denatured alcohol, if the paint is not dry yet it will work.

pour some on and let sit for a few minuates, agitate with the rag, pour more on and keep scrubbing and bloting off with a clean '; White rag'; !!!!

It works wonders on carpet and fabrics.

Test a small area to make sure it will not take the color out of the carpet, but if its not a red or bright color it should be ok.

How long after I paint my walls with latex paint can I move the furniture back in and use the room again?

well i would wait atleast 6 hrs to move things back to where they were in the room , just becaus e the paint feels dry to the touch underneath may not be dryed , and th e more coats put on the walls etc , should hav e more drying time , so i would atleast wait 6 hrs , if th eroom was well vetilated etc , and if u or someone in th e home cant stand the smell of fresh paint i would open all windows in th eroom painted and place a fan in the room tha t will help push the smeell out , even though the fresh smell of paint can last a few days , it will not be as stroung afte r doing this , but wait atleast 6 hrs , or read the can that the paint was in and see what there recomendations or drying and setting time isHow long after I paint my walls with latex paint can I move the furniture back in and use the room again?
most latex paints dry in 30 minutes. Wait one hour before moving everything back in.How long after I paint my walls with latex paint can I move the furniture back in and use the room again?
Definitely not when touch to dry, u might get lucky but ususally the outer layer will dry faster then inner. Normally if u read the label of the can u buy they have cure time and thats what u go by.If the day is humid or raining or cold then the cure time will be lot longer, that also should be on the label. It all matters on the weather of ur area, but cure time is what u follow.
After the paint is dry. I'd wait an hour or two. If you are going to be leaning anything against the wall, wait alot longer as there is a good chance of the paint adhering to it and it peeling off the wall. Just be sure and be cautious of where your stuff is. I just painted my whole interior of my house, so I'm speaking from right now experience.
Move your furniture back in, it's dry.
I have never moved furniture out or stopped using a room while painting. Latex paint dries almost immediately.
as soon as it's dry to the touch

What is the advantage,if any,of latex enamel paint over latex paint?

can you also apply latex enamel over latex?i am assuming so.What is the advantage,if any,of latex enamel paint over latex paint?
you can apply any latex paint over any existing latex paint ,you have better maintenance with latex enamel ,over say, latex flat .its washable and better suited for traffic areas ,kids room etc. enamel is available in different sheens as well satin ,semi and high gloss ....What is the advantage,if any,of latex enamel paint over latex paint?
enamel paint is alot thicker and wares better so if you need to wash it it will last longer
latex enamel is more expensive but it great if your going to have a lot of traffic or kids around it cleans up easily. If you want to go the cheaper route a good latex satin finish is just as good.

Latex paint is bubbling on my ceiling. How can I fix it?

My husband is painting the ceiling on our second floor. He's cleaned it and started painting. However, he's discovering that the paint is bubbling at places and easily coming off. I need to know how we can stop that from happening.Latex paint is bubbling on my ceiling. How can I fix it?
It could be dampness like the two other posters said

If so, use a dehumidifier for a couple of days first

it could also be that the ceiling needs to be primed, this would especially be the case if it is new sheetrock.

KpLatex paint is bubbling on my ceiling. How can I fix it?
Definitely a moisture problem. Do you have a ceiling exhaust fan in that bathroom? take the grill off and check if there is moisture in there. You could have a condensation problem with warm air from the bathroom contacting cold air in the attic above. Make sure your attic floor above the bathroom is fully insulated with blown-ion or fiberglass insulation. Once the ceiling is dry, you can spray or paint on a coat of shellac. This will serve as sealer/primer coat. Don't lay it on too thick. Just one thin coat. Then you can paint your latex paint on top of it.
this is due to dampness on the surface. the surface you painted on was not completely dry hence this problem. look for a leakage source seal it wait for the moisture to evaporate then paint.
Consult a good painter to rectify the problem

Try this but test the spray on another piece of hidden carpet first.

    http://www.wikihow.com/Remove-Latex-Pain鈥?/a>

Also, assuming latex paint melts and your carpet doesn't, I've got rid of stuff like this by using a sheet of paper kitchen towel over it and then ironing the kitchen towel. Use a low heat and again check the carpet somewhere hidden first before using the iron near it.
I found that Kaboom works really good for stains.
    replace it
Good one! UNFORTUNATELY, the warm soapy water is about it...and guess what, THAT CAN DAMAGE THE CARPET, the padding AND the floor underneath it TOO!

Best thing to do is ask the landlord where he got the carpet--your Aunt loves how it wears like iron, blah blah blah---GO wherever he got it get a remnant....THEN find ';carpet installers'; in the yellow pages, explain what the heck you did, that you have a replacement piece and can they please come out and CUT and RESEW the carpet....

See, all bases are covered! Good as new, the landlord WILL NEVER KNOW!
spray some oven cleaner on and let it sit on the item for 3 or 4 hours. rub well with a stiff brush and wash with hot water and dish soap.

    ';haley's cleaning hints'; book.
I know this is a little unconventional but try white spirit.

I had a pot of gloss paint spilt on a tan rug and I used white spirit and it came up looking like new!

However, it was only a cheap rug. If you paid a lot of money for the carpet you might want to try just a small patch first!!!

    Good luck!
You're outa luck on that one. The only thing you can do is have the carpet replaced. You'll probably have to pay for it since you live in an apartment. Sorry.
i used goof off for the purple paint I got on the carpets in my new office and it worked perfect. Just check it in an inconspicuous area to make sure it won't damage the carpet further.
You'll never get it all out. Have to replace at least that room to make it match.
My dear, you need to get a new carpet. Not going to come up.
Tell the landlord and pay to replace the carpet.
go to the paint store and look for something called

    ';Krud Kutter';.
Water will work as long as the paint is still wet. Once its dry, about the only thing I could suggest is go out and get a light tannish can of paint and spill that over the stain.
    Try Oxyclean and warm water.

  • Will oil or latex paint last longer for an interior mural?

I'm painting a small mural for a lady who insists oil paint will last hundreds of years as opposed to artists' latex paints (like Golden or Liquitex). Is spraying latex paint without a mask dangerous?

I only spray outside. I do about 6-10 houses a summer. I ';backbrush'; almost all of them, so it is not like I am in a fog of spray. I try not to breathe the vapors. If I know it is unavoidable I do wear a mask. Your thoughts? Is spraying latex paint without a mask dangerous?
Repeated exposure over a long period of time may lead to serious side effects. I know this because me fiancee works in pest control and he works around all sorts of chemicals all day, latex paint is also a chemical that you shouldn't breathe in over a long time.Is spraying latex paint without a mask dangerous?
If you do 6 to 10 houses a summer, you're exposing yourself considerably to microscopic particles you can't even see.. and [sad to say] might well be setting yourself up with serious lung problems years up the line. For about $45-60 [paint supply place or welder's supply place] you can get a top of the line protective mask with filters, and write it off as work-related expense at tax-time. Don't assume that because you're not in a ';fog of spray'; that you're safe out there. If you can smell it, you're breathing it in. Lots of old coots suffering with emphysema today are paying for being maskless macho-men 30 years ago.
just get a freakin' mask and flollow the directions. don't be a dumbf**k
use a mask - better safe than sorry

    or better safe than toxic
As a painter myself , I would suggest wearing a mask , otherwise you could turn out like my dad ( now retired) ,He never believed in wearing a mask , and his lungs are no good , he never smoked , only years of paint particles , along with the ammonia ,and many other particles like silicone etc. contained in latex paint . He was very surprised that the exposure to latex has done him more harm than the exposure to all of the lead base paints from the 60's and early 70's..., But of course with the homes we paint there is no spraying outdoors period , mainly to protect the copper roofing , cars , stonework , and other surrounding things that could possibly get painted as well . But anyway I would get the mask if you are unsure as to which is best , go to Sherwin Williams , another paint store and tell them you need a protective mask for spraying latex .

use paint thinner or turpentine, after the paint comes out, wash the carpet with plenty of soap to get it all out.How do you get Latex paint out of carpet?
You might try plain old soap and water first. If you are going to try turpentine or paint thinner, check it out on a small piece of carpet in an out of sight area ( maybe under the couch.)Sometimes it will discolor your carpet, please check first. How do you get Latex paint out of carpet?
Did this happen recently? My grandson at the age of 18 months spilled a paint pan on to the carpet in a rented apartment. We made a quick trip and rented a carpet cleaning machine that extracted the water you put down. It took a while, but they got it all up. Just used regular rug shampoo.
I think the best way would be to use turpentine.
if it is dried and you use a petroleum based product (like turpentine or paint thinner) it may remove the paint but also make the glue in your rug come loose and ruin your carpet making the pile come loose...........best to clean it up right away or it is probably a permanent thing. Just clean up with just plain soap and water
That ';oops'; you heard during that painting project in the other room is bad news - latex paint can ruin a carpet. Act fast or you may have to permanently place a potted plant in that stained spot.

    Steps:

    1. Remove as much wet paint as you can by blotting with a clean, white, absorbent cloth; work from the outside in to avoid spreading the stain.

    2. Sponge with cool water and blot again (still from the outside in) until you've removed as much paint as you can.

    3. Mix one teaspoon mild dishwashing detergent in a cup of lukewarm water.

    4. Blot with detergent solution solution, using a clean, white cloth, working from the outside in.

    5. Let the area dry completely and vacuum.

    Tips:

If you've allowed a latex paint stain to dry, contact a professional carpet cleaning service to see if it can remove the stain. You may have to live with it.
mix about a half cap full of frabric softner to 8 oz. of water. Let soak and rub in circular motion with a toothbrush or nail brush. Rinse with clean water when done.

You didn't say how big of an area, I always clean up small drips with rubbing alcohol. What's the best way to get latex paint out of carpet???
    Buy new carpet.
It's difficult. You have to go to the courthouse and file eviction papers and wait for a hearing and get the sherrif out there to oversee the eviction......what a headache!
    ooo, tricky.

your best bet is to call the paint manufacturer and follow their advice.
Baby oil is good to remove latex paint. It's not as harsh as turpentine. But you'll need to wash the area with a good carpet cleaner to get the baby oil out. Pour a bit of baby oil on the paint and let it sit for about 10 minutes. Then wipe it off. You may have to repeat the process.
Ivory soap, water and a stiff bristled brush. You have to let it soak to soften up the paint...the brush should peel it right off the fibers but it takes some elbow grease. FOR GOD'S SAKE DO NOT USE PAINT THINNER!!! IT WILL ROT YOUR PADDING AND THE BURLAP BACKING!!!!
a lot water with a toothbrush . It was help me a lot
Replace the carpet. Try paint thinner just a little bit on a rag...
Very difficult latex paint and epoxy modified paints tend to bond to carpet fiber. The best option is to cut and replace the area if possible with the same carpet. If it is a continuous filament nylon you can try and ';Shave'; off the paint spot.

    Otherwise you are SOL
Lighter fluid works great on most latex and tar type spills. Soak a cloth and dab, not rub wet paint and if the paint is dry set the rag on the spot for about a minute to soften the latex and then dab.

You can also use a paint thinner or enamel reducer if you have it. These work better but cost money if you don't already have them.

Can you paint over oil based primer with interior latex paint?

I am remodeling my bathroom and after stripping some ancient wallpaper from drywall that had not beein primed prior to wallpapering, I have many spots in the drywall that have torn into the top paper layer of the drywall. There are also a few spots where not all of the old wallpaper was completely removed and there is some residual adhesive. I have been told that painting over such spots will cause the old paper to bubble and peel away so after mudding over the bad spots and sanding, I should paint with oil based primer.

My question is.. after mudding and sanding the walls should I use latex primer or oil based primer and if I use oil based primer, is it possible to paint over that with interior latex paint? Can you paint over oil based primer with interior latex paint?
Oil based primer is absolutely the best choice for a damp environment like a bathroom. Latex top coat paints will adhere perfectly to oil based primer. The oil primer will seal the drywall and help prevent mildew from forming on the drywall. Oil is an excellent choice. I use this method all the time. the other answerer's are confusing latex paint over oil paint. that doesn't work at all.Can you paint over oil based primer with interior latex paint?
you should use a oil based primer to prevent the left over paper from absorbing the water from water based and causing it to bubble and fall off..... using an oil primer is best to seal the walls and make sure that what ever paper is left on is safe from falling sealing the wall is the important part of the oil base...... you may use a latex paint after if you wish.....
We used a latex primer on the drywall when we built a room. It worked fine.
I have lived through the very same scenario.

I rented a steamer and removed every last bit of the adhesive. Then I bought a shellac-based primer called ';Kilz'; (BIN makes one, too.) and primed the bare dry wall BEFORE I did the patching. This stuff cleans up with acetone (nail polish remover) and should be used with good ventilation. Kilz is guarenteed to cover just about any kind of stain you can think of including knots in raw wood and cigarette smoke stains.

I built up the deepest holes in layers allowing the compound to dry fir 24 hours between applications. When I had feathered it smooth and allowed it to dry, I primed the spots.

You can then use a water-based Melamine paint designed for kitchens and bathrooms where high humidity is present. I purchase mine at Home Depot.

Not in amillion years will I understand why folks put wallpaper in high humidity locations. Mildew and bacteria are opportunistic organisms just looking for good locations to multiply.
Try sanding the oil paint to give it a ';roughed up'; surface for the new paint to adhere to. You don't have to sand very deep. I would use a kilz product especially since this is in your bathroom. It will help control/prevent mold and mildew. It also is an excellent primer.
You CANNOT use latex over oil based, unless you WANT it to peal.

    It's like cooking on a non-stick surface...things don't stick!
    Hi there

I鈥檓 an interior designer and I just notice your question. You know what if your walls are just a mess there is this special wall paper that you can get to cover the walls and then you can paint on top of this special wall paper. Saying this I seen it and it looks really good after your finish. With this wall paper you will be accomplish a nice cover and the imperfections of the wall. (Remember this wall paper is especially for this kind of wall)

Then you can paint the room the colour you want and the kind of paint you want to us. My preference is latex paint Benjan Moore. Good luck
You need to confirm this at your local paint store because it's been years since I've actually done it:

If I recall correctly, whenever I've had to seal a damaged wall, whether it was banged and exposed metal wall corners or patched wallboard, I've used an oil base primer (in all the rooms) -- just because it's the best and I knew it would stick well to the wall and to any type of paint -- either water or oil based.

    Listen to uncle bob (above)

How do you keep interior latex paint from bubbling when painting wood?

Two things: First, you need to make sure that the wood has NO oil stains on it, and second, you need a good primer/sealer applied first! How do you keep interior latex paint from bubbling when painting wood?
The ends are porous and can be filled with a special powder that you mix with a liquid and then rubbed in with your fingers to seal these open pores. Then, of course, spraying is preferred as it covers more uniformly and the sheen is unbeatable! (No brush strokes either).

How do you keep interior latex paint from bubbling when painting wood?
Those are air bubbles. They are usually caused by synthetic brushes. Why don't you get a low nap roller? Roll the paint on, and then just glide a bristle brush over lightly to eliminate roller marks. Yes, sand the surface first.
It's what we call fish eyes and I agree with Mr. love as what procedure you need to take, preferably an oil primer for wood.

if you scuff up the oil layer and apply the kilz this will act as a barrier separating the two products from each other, so long as the oil paint is dry. when wet they will separate
I have been a paint department manager for many years. This is I have learned over the years. You can paint over an oil based primer with a latex paint. You can not paint over an oil based paint with a latex paint. Go Figure, I can't remember the reason why, sorry. And you can paint over an oil based paint with latex paint if you sand the surface first. If you want more information, go to Kilz.com. or call 1-866-Primer-1. That is Kilz Primer's question hot-line. Byee
doesn't matter with Kiltz . It to seal any surface so your paint don't soak right thru!
You can. I do it all the time with no problems. Things-products change for the better.
escruggs is right. i only use oil based primer, it bonds better. you have to wait a bit longer for it to dry before you can put the top coat on, but it will stick to the surface better. good luck.
Yes, you CAN paint over oil based paints with latex. It's the other way around that causes all the problems. Never paint oil based over latex.

Can I put spar varnish over latex paint?

I'm planning on finishing a mahogany quarterboard sign with black lettering - should I paint the letters (latex paint) before of after I varnish the mahogany with spar varnish? Can I put spar varnish over latex paint?
No, varnish, especially spar varnish is a hard finish. Latex, IS latex... It will always be a bit soft and ';mushy';... Any spar varnish put over it will crack...

So, what you need to do is strip the wood, sand it, use a tack cloth, and then follow the directions on the spar varnish container.

You might want to look at varathane though. Because you will need to do 5 to 12 coats. 5 coats are minimum and 12 for a marine coat. Can I put spar varnish over latex paint?
You can varnish afterwards, but make sure the paint has completely dried, preferably left overnight.
    Paint first.

You may also want to consider engraving or burning the letters into the wood, if you have the tools to do so.

    Good luck!

  • I bought a gallon PINK OOPS latex paint. I need to change color of the gallon.?

I wish to change this lite to medium pink semi gloss latex to a warm tan/beige. Please someone help me salvage this gallon by changing the color.I bought a gallon PINK OOPS latex paint. I need to change color of the gallon.?
Take it to a good home repair center with a paint department, like Menards, Home Depot, etc. If they sell that brand of paint, all the better.

Choose a paint chip from the multitude of colors on display. On the back will be a sort-of coded recipe of pigments used to achieve this color.

Your success in changing this gallon of paint's color will depend on the new color you select. If the can has a label with the amounts of pigment which were initially added to the base color paint, you can be even more accurate. Knowing the amounts of pigment in the paint will allow the paint technician to add the right amount of pigment to get the new color you want.

You won't be able to change a semi-gloss to a gloss or matte finish, however. That's determined by the composition of the base paint before pigment's added.I bought a gallon PINK OOPS latex paint. I need to change color of the gallon.?
get some umber and ochre and add it to the pink until u get the color u want. Get an extra can so u can split the pink in half and have some mixing room LOL
You can maybe take it back and along with a swatch of the color you want. Most people who work in the paint department will probably look at you like you have two heads, because they get paid by the hour so the more they can get the hour to go by without having to do anything or think even, the better.

However, you might luck out and find someone who knows enough about tinting paint to be able to add white and yellow ochre to bring it around to a more tan/beige color. It all depends on the operator, but most of them will not want to be bothered because it involves thinking and taking a risk, and they do not want to do either.

I actually did this once; I had a stain tinted and it came out far too purple-grape and was able to go back and have it brought around to a more brick red color. There are tints you can buy, such as Tints-All, and you can try this yourself, but unless you know how to mix tints you could end up with mud.
