How can you get latex paint out of a carpet without messing it up?

I must say, your chances of totally removing the paint aren't good.

If it's still wet: Blot as much as possible with an absorbent cloth. Flood the stain with water and then get as much water as possible up, either by blotting, or preferably, with a wet/dry vac or carpet steam-cleaning device. Repeat many many times. HOPEFULLY this will do the trick.

If it's dry and is a very small stain (like one single drop of paint). Hopefully the carpet has a medium pile (most standard residential carpet does). Take tweezers and a sharp razor blade. Use the tweezers to hold the section of dried paint steady and carefully cut right below the paint with the razor blade. If it's a really, really small spot (covering, say, 3-4 plies of carpet), the resulting dent in the carpet pile should be unnoticeable. For slightly larger spots, you may have to feather a few surrounding plies of carpet with the razor blade to ';cut in'; the dent. Work slowly and be very very careful. Hard to get blood out of carpet too.

For a LARGE dry stain. You can TRY saturating it with an appropriate paint thinner, and hope that it softens enough to be sucked out with water. Check your paint thinner on an inconspicuous portion of carpet first, because if you dissolve the carpet, it will look even worse. If the paint is only on the very tops of the fibers, you can try cutting it free as you would with a smaller stain, but you're likely to have a really noticeable dent in your carpet pile henceforth. Realistically, for a large dry stain, you're probably just going to have to purchase an attractive throw rug.
Use denatured alcohol, if the paint is not dry yet it will work.

pour some on and let sit for a few minuates, agitate with the rag, pour more on and keep scrubbing and bloting off with a clean '; White rag'; !!!!

It works wonders on carpet and fabrics.

Test a small area to make sure it will not take the color out of the carpet, but if its not a red or bright color it should be ok.
