What is the best way to paint over oil based paint with latex paint on a bookshelf?

Hi, I paint for a living too and MAYBE you can just sand and then paint them but I would NEVER do that. There is a rule here.... you can paint oil over latex but not latex over oil. If you paint over oil with latex it will (fishtail) meaning it kind of smears around and will also come off really easily even if you just take your fingernail and rub across it and it will look horrible in a very short time. However, you can paint over it with latex if you use a product called B.I.N. first. It is an oil based primer (they make it in latex too so make sure you get the oil based kind, it will dry in less than an hour.) Then you can paint over that with a latex paint and it won't do the fishtailing. But this has a strong odor so make sure you use lots of ventilation. I'm not sure why you don't want to use an oil based paint? But to get the best finish it is well worth the extra effort to put a coat of BIN on it first. ( you also won't need to sand if you do this.) If you decide to use an oil based paint you don't really need to do anything other than make sure you put the same sheen on it. ie... if it's painted in semi gloss you need to put semi gloss on again.(maybe lightly sand first.)What is the best way to paint over oil based paint with latex paint on a bookshelf?
1 of two ways

start with primer and paint over oil base with that first then put regular laytex on top of primer

or get stripper strip ols paint then use ur laytex and paint 1 or two coats depending on how dry wood isWhat is the best way to paint over oil based paint with latex paint on a bookshelf?
Lightly sand prime with a oil based primer/sealer then latex paint can be used probable one coat will be fine with the primer
You need to use a bonding primer there are several out the x i m is one gripper is another sand you project first then use your bonding primer then paint with your latex
like they said, sand, prime, then paint. keep in mind, the latex paint will be much softer on the bookcase, so it will not hold up as well as the oil did...

I would suggest Priming with Benjamin Moore Fresh Start Primer

Try to lightly sand off the oil paint if you just go over it the new paint will peel
Lightly sand the entire shelf with 100 grit sand paper and apply your paint, with sanding there is no need to prime but if you'd like you can just have it tinted to your finish color or apply 2 coats of latex. As one answer said the latex won't be as hard as the oil and it takes ALL paint at least 30 days to cure so don't be putting anything heavy on them for a good week and nothing on them for 48 hrs, Good luck Les the painter
